Wednesday: Periods of snow showers, could become a steady snow at times… windy. High in the mid 30s. NW wind 10 to 15mph. Chance of snow 70%. Slushy light snow accumulation of a coating to 2 inches possible in the valley… 2 to 4 inches possible in the Catskills.
Wednesday Night: Periods of snow showers tapering off. Low in the upper 20s. Chance of snow 60%. A slushy coating possible.
Thursday: Cloudy and windy with scattered snow showers and flurries, and a light west wind. High in the mid 30s. Chance of snow 50%.
While the storm forecast wasn’t a bust… the warm air at the mid levels surged into the Hudson Valley even faster than expected. We expected to see an inch or two of snow on the front end of the storm, before it changed to a mix of sleet and freezing rain… then eventually rain in the valleys. The only thing missing was the snow. We had also worried about the potential for a period of wet snow across the valley during Tuesday afternoon… that too, never materialized. We knew there would be surprises… and the complete lack of snow in the valley locations was definitely one. A soaking rain was needed, and received across the Hudson Valley, with 1.16″ in Poughkeepsie… and a general 1.00″ to 2.00″ of rain fell across the region.
Unsettled conditions will be the story for Wednesday. We’ll see snow showers enhance across the Hudson Valley, and periods of light to moderate snow will be likely thru the day. Temperatures should be in the mid 30s for most valley locations… and that should keep roads mainly wet. However… some areas may see bursts of heavy snow, and in those locations, snow could fall hard enough to accumulate… so we’ll keep an eye out for that.
But we expect the unsettled conditions to continue for the next few days…
So expect seasonably cold weather the next few days… and unsettled conditions, which could provide snow showers and even some minor accumulations. We’ll track the snow showers on the Facebook page, and try to keep you ahead of any potentially slick travel.
So… you’ll have to excuse the ridiculous paragraph headline “Billy’s Banter”. Prior to my HVW days, I would occasionally ramble about non-weather related thoughts after addressing the weather. The section title is just a way to let you know that some non-weather related info lies ahead.
So after 2 winter storms, it’s hard to believe that it’s practically mid December already. Things have been crazy, but a ton of fun. Monday night, Alex and I tried a little experiment… and opened up a 30 minute impromptu Q&A session on the Facebook page. It was a ton of fun, but insane. Alex and I scrambled to keep up with all of the questions for 30 straight minutes, answering as many storm related questions as possible. Talk about fast paced… it felt like we were running a race, trying to keep up with all of your questions and comments. But ultimately, we did it because we love it… and you guys make HVW what it is. All the interactions, the real-time observations… and most importantly, the support. You guys keep us going, thru each storm… and during the slow weather. Your kind comments, suggestions and feedback… make it so much fun to be a part of HVW.
But for now… I’m going to grab some sleep… because I need to take the Weather Munchkin to school on Wednesday. So thanks for your support thru this storm. Despite the lack of valley snow… we hope HVW helped you stay ahead of the icy conditions and soaking rain we saw on Tuesday. Have a great Wednesday everyone!!
