Now that’s Hot! Tuesday was one of… if not the most oppressive days in 2014. The theme heard on numerous network news stations was “the hottest day of the year”. Well, not quite. Poughkeepsie hit 91° on Tuesday… which puts it in a 3 way tie for the 2nd hottest day of 2014 (hottest was 93° on July 2nd). It was the humidity that made Tuesday so brutal. The heat index in Poughkeepsie at one point was up to 97°… so even if it wasn’t technically the hottest day of the year, it sure felt like it at times.
The cold front has pushed thru the Hudson Valley as of late Tuesday night… and while Delaware county saw some severe thunderstorms (even a tornado warning due to very strong rotation in one of storm cells), much of the area saw little to no rainfall. The line of thunderstorms really fell apart once the sun set, as the real fuel for these storms was the heating of the day. It’s great that the majority of the Hudson Valley avoided any severe weather… but as we’ve discussed numerous times this summer, the rain sure wouldn’t hurt. Below is the radar estimated rainfall for Tuesday. As you can see… the bulk of the action was in the NW part of the area, with much of the area seeing little if any measurable rainfall.
In the wake of the cold front… we’ll see a beautiful day shape up on Wednesday. Mostly sunny skies, and very comfortable levels of humidity. A warm, sunny day appears headed our way. Then, after a comfortable night on Wednesday night… it looks like another outstanding day for Thursday. So after a few very sticky summer like days… the Hudson Valley gets a nice reprieve once again. The heat will stick around… with each day above normal (in the mid 80s)… and by the weekend, we could see the humidity return.
With the weather quieting down for a day or two… time to use that to my advantage and get some “extra” sleep. I say extra, because even going to bed earlier than I usually do… puts me probably at less than 6 hours of sleep for the night. The curse of being a weather nut. Hope you have a great Wednesday!
