Having spent several minutes trying to come up with a headline that truly catches the spirit of what Sunday has in store… let’s first take a look back to Friday’s snow totals… courtesy of the National Weather Service.
These snow totals are by no means substantial… but when you realize that they are for March 20th… they’re rather significant. Our northern most locations only saw a half inch to an inch… and our southern most locations saw right around 5 inches. Fairly impressive for the 1st day of spring. Now lets move forward one more day to Saturday…
Poughkeepsie reported 1.4″ of snow from Friday’s event, bringing the season total up to 58.6″. That’s 15″ (34%) above average. Last winter, Poughkeepsie recorded 60.2″ of snow… so we’re only 1.6 inches away from that total. So in terms of snow… this winter is right on par with last winter, even without any major nor’easters this year.
In addition… the month of March is well below average, and only going to get colder. The next 3 days alone, should help inflate that -3.7° closer to -5.0°. The winter of 2014 – 2015 just won’t quit.
Short Range Forecast
If Sunday’s date was January 15th… the temperatures would be below average. So when you consider that the Sunday’s date is actually March 22nd… these kind of high temperatures are nothing short of horrendous. The average high temperature for today, is 50°… that puts Sunday’s high temperature about 20 degrees below average. These temperatures are incredibly cold! But this isn’t even HALF of the story. The Hudson Valley will be treated to a northwest wind of 10 to 15mph… and with the temperatures above, that’s going to translate into some horrendous wind chills. How bad is it going to be?…
Rotten… plain and simple. There are towns and villages that have St. Patrick’s Day parades on Sunday… and the only way the weather could be worse, is if it were snowing. You’re going to need many layers on Sunday… as the wind will chill you to the bone. Spring? …. Hardly.
The Sunday night / Monday morning low temperature in Poughkeepsie is projected to be near 15°… which just so happens to ALSO be the record low temperature for Monday morning. So as if Sunday afternoon was bad enough… Sunday night, we might challenge a record low temperature in Poughkeepsie. It just gets better and better, doesn’t it?
Monday doesn’t get much better… as temperatures are projected to again be in the low to mid 30s. Back to back days like this in mid/late March… this is very rare stuff. Tuesday looks a little better… before we finally warm up on Wednesday. For complete details, be sure to check out the HVW 5 Day Forecast. And if you’re planning your Sunday or Monday morning… be sure to check out the 24hr Forecast tab at the top of this page (just above the radar).
Thanks so much for your support! The past few days… as well as the entire winter! A couple more weeks, and this will all just be a bad memory.
