Another record falls. Poughkeepsie pulls off a rare feat for the month of March, and falls below zero. -2°F breaks the old record that was set in another brutal Hudson Valley winter… 1978. It’s been so ridiculously cold… that somehow, this morning’s record didn’t feel all that brutal. The type of cold air that we’ve become accustomed to this winter… when we finally have a nice stretch of average temps (next week)… it’s going to feel like May to many of us.
We continue to be below average in terms of liquid precipitation (about 20% below average)… but well above average in terms if snowfall (roughly 45% above average). The only way you pull off above average snowfall with below average precipitation… is a brutally cold winter.
After an extremely active start to the month of March… things will turn tranquil for a few days…
A few disturbances will pass by to our north… and they could spread some clouds and even a few flurries from time to time. But after a month spent in the deep freeze, temps in the mid to upper 30s will feel like mid spring. We are by no means talking about the nicest weekend of all time… but I don’t think we’ll have many complaints with this one.
Looking down the road a few days… temps should moderate even further by early next week. We’re not trying to get anyone worked up into a frenzy… and we’re by no means “guaranteeing” anything. But some of the data wants to push highs next week into the mid 40s across the valley.
Long Range Speculation…
We say “some” of the data… because the GFS computer model (which has performed quite well this winter)… tries to give winter one last stand next weekend (about 7 days from now)…
The GFS model uncorks a substantial snowstorm for next weekend. But before you get too excited (or depressed)… the European model says it’s much warmer next weekend, and that it would be mainly rain. The point, is that for now… it’s nothing more than a conversation piece. We’ll be watching daily to monitor the potential. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop. We’ve just had questions already… and rather than let you hear rumors, we wanted to address it.
Alex and I have a feeling that we’ve not yet heard the last from this winter. Whatever comes down the pipeline, we’ll keep you ahead of the game.
Well… what day is it? Where am I? WHO am I? These are all questions I feel like I ask myself on a daily basis, now that I have 2 daughters to chase after. Life is good… but hectic, and crazy. I haven’t had time or energy to do the ‘banter’ section, and tonight’s not much different. But I’ve had lots of requests for a picture or two of The Weather Peanut… and wanted to try and accommodate. So here you go… and have a wonderful weekend!!
