Heavy Rain, Embedded Thunder,Dense Fog, Refreeze:
Rain associated with incoming cold front is impacting the region this morning. Rain heavy at times with imbedded lightning and thunder will role through the region, the impressive thermal gradient between the air incoming and the warmth ahead of the front is aiding in creating the deeper convection, hence the embedded thunder.
Also keep in mind that warm air moving over the snow pack and colder surfaces is also creating areas of dense advection fog. Please use caution if traveling. Temps will continue to rise for a few more hours but it will be brief. Colder air is currently racing across New York State, by later this afternoon we will be headed back below freezing which will once again create icy conditions tonight.
So a bit of a strange day, not uncommon to see warm air surging ahead of a powerful cold front, seeing most of of warmth has occurred overnight and we will not see any sunshine, most of the snowpack will survive. Just keep in mind that as the snow absorbs the rain, and refreezes later tonight, any snow that you didn’t move will become a difficult task by tomorrow.
