A quiet start to our work week in terms of weather. Our flow is once again out of the northwest, which this time of year translates into cool temperatures and comfortable humidity levels. It’s a pattern we’ve seen a lot this summer, and the theme will continue as we begin the first week of August. Partly cloudy skies for our Monday, and reasonably comfortable levels of humidity will make for a great start to the work week. Tuesday will follow with similar conditions, maybe a few more clouds and a degree or two warmer. One thing that sticks out both days… is the lack of thunderstorm risk. The northwest flow is a dry and stable flow, which will greatly reduce the risk for afternoon showers and storms. Considering what early August is capable of producing in terms of the weather… we continue to be quite lucky. If time permits on Monday or Monday night… we’ll take a look at the week ahead, but let’s just say that the near average temps look to continue thru the week, and the greatest chance of afternoon showers and storms could be Wednesday.
Sunday started off a bit wet for the eastern 2/3 of the Hudson Valley. My house could use the rain… as almost all of the rain from the past few days has danced around my house. That was also the case Sunday morning… as I woke up to dry ground and gray skies. A quick check of the Facebook page alerted me to the rain falling over much of the area. It didn’t last long… and before long patches of blue sky and sun were beginning to mix with the clouds. Poughkeepsie high temps only reached 79°, which is about 5° below the average high for the date.
But I didn’t stick around to witness any of that on Sunday. I was up early, and on the highway by mid morning… heading for the Poconos. My wife and I were on the way to our annual NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway (Warning : NASCAR Spoiler Alert). When my wife and I started dating about 10 years ago, she was already a NASCAR fan. I went to my first race at Pocono with her, and became an instant fan. Each year we go with a group of friends, tailgate, and then watch 43 cars race at 180mph for 400 miles. It’s not for everyone, but if you’ve ever seen them race on TV and been even slightly interested… you should check it out. When they take the green flag on the 1st lap, and those engines roar, you can feel it in your chest… and it’s like nothing else. That was the moment I was hooked.
My wife has been a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan since before we met. She’s seen him race nearly 20 times… and at all the races she’s been to, he’s done rather poorly. But Sunday changed all that, as something happened that my wife never thought she’d get to see. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 1st out of 43 cars, and my wife got to see her favorite driver of all time win in person… which naturally made my day as well. Here’s a snapshot I took as Dale Jr. did burnouts while celebrating the win.
It was a great day… I hope you had an excellent weekend as well! Have a good start to your Monday…
