Can you spare seven days a year? Have you ever wanted to enjoy the beauty that is the Catskill Mountains, while also being a part of keeping them as wild and pristine as they are meant to be? As most of you know, my second passion after the weather is the outdoors. I am an avid hiker and a member of many hiking groups. One of those groups is the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. This group helps lead conservation in the Catskills among other hiking trails throughout NY and NJ. They also make the very popular trail maps that most hikers own. I hold the position of Co-Chair of the Southern Catskills Trails, and oversee the maintenance of many mile of trails throughout Ulster and Sullivan County. This is accomplished with a group of volunteers that consist of maintainers, supervisors and Chairs. Among the benefits of becoming a member of the conference and a volunteer, are classes on everything from how to build a trail, to navigation. There are also discounts at certain stores. We are currently looking for 100 maintainers and 8 crew leaders to help keep the Southern Catskills beautiful, and we are offering an intro to trail maintenance class to everyone who joins between now and May 15th. The class will be held at the Spillian, a beautiful camp in the heart of the Catskills. Here we will guide new volunteers through a hands on class. This class will help equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to help keeps the trails safe and beautiful. If you can spare a few days a year in some of the most beautiful scenery, while maintaining the trails to protect the mountains and their longevity, then please join me!
