Well… here goes nothin’…
To the 5,600+ Facebook fans as well as the thousands of readers of the Mid Hudson Weather website, I thank you for joining me on this new adventure.
To the 76,000+ Facebook fans as well as the tens of thousands of readers of the Hudson Valley Weather website, my name is Bill Potter, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to show you why Alex has asked me to join him in taking HVW to the next level.
In 2008, I created a website called Mid Hudson Weather. I began the website as a way to provide my friends and family with the weather. Not that NYC based weather forecast… but a weather forecast that was focused on our area. Much like Alex, I spent the majority of my childhood forcing my family to watch The Weather Channel for hours on end. At age 12, I began to forecast and document weather data. I had a 5 day forecast posted on the outside of my bedroom door. I even had entire notebooks filled with the weather history over the course of 5 years, when in 1998, I graduated from Wallkill Senior High School. I went to SUNY Albany and studied Accounting for 4 years, receiving my BS in Accounting. People to this day ask me why I didn’t get a degree in Meteorology, and really, there are 2 reasons. First, I felt the job market was much larger for accountants. But second, as odd as it may sound, I was afraid of ruining my passion for weather by making it a “job”… really quite ironic as things turned out.
I have operated Mid Hudson Weather (MHW) for 6 years, and in just the past 12 months, it has grown substantially. I’ve been blessed with the support of thousands of fans, who have motivated me to do so much more than I ever thought possible. But also like Alex, I have a full time job that pays the bills. I also have a beautiful wife and gorgeous daughter who turns 3 in just over a week. With so many responsibilities extending beyond MHW, I had no idea how I was going to juggle everything. I’m motivated by the fans… the more positive feedback I get… the more time and energy I’m going to invest. I was spending 4 to 5 hours a night on MHW last winter, and when we had a storm threat, it was like working 2 full time jobs. I was at my limit. And then Alex presented me with this opportunity.
It hurts to give up something you’ve spent 6 years customizing, designing and sharing with the Hudson Valley… just like it was no easy decision for Alex to share his creation with someone he doesn’t hardly know. But sometimes an opportunity comes along and you can’t pass it up. Or… as Marlon Brando might have said… Alex, “Made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” Alex shared his vision for HVW with me, and I am very excited to be able to help him take HVW to the next level. By joining forces… Alex and I will have the ability to pool our time and resources, allowing us to provide you with much more content and more frequent storm updates. It’s really going to be a great thing!
It may take some getting used to… for both HVW fans, as well as MHW fans. But in reality, not much is changing at all… it’s just one letter.
